1. Build the inventory and success criteria
Record buckets, object counts, total capacity and object-size distribution. Separately inventory metadata, tags, ACLs or policies, versioning, lifecycle, encryption, object lock and deleted versions because they can change copy behavior. Name application owners and define acceptable data-loss and downtime boundaries before migration.
- Source buckets, prefixes, object count, capacity and largest object
- Metadata, tag, version, policy, lifecycle, encryption and lock requirements
- Application write pattern, owner, dependencies, maintenance window and acceptance criteria
2. Test S3 API compatibility against the workload
Observe the operations used at the source and validate each one at the target: bucket and object creation or deletion, multipart uploads, presigned URLs, range requests, metadata, versioning, lifecycle and error codes. Exercise endpoint, region, signature version, credential flow and SDK configuration in a test environment. A successful connection does not prove every required application behavior is compatible.
3. Estimate duration, egress and change rate
Initial-copy duration depends on more than total capacity. Object count and size distribution, request limits, available bandwidth, parallelism, source egress and target write behavior all matter. Measure data changed during the initial copy. A large final delta may require a maintenance window, temporary dual writes or several incremental synchronization passes.
4. Take a trial copy and check integrity
Choose a representative sample containing small and large objects, multipart uploads, custom metadata and different permission patterns. In addition to object and byte totals, use checksum mechanisms supported by the target and tool, then read random samples through the application. An ETag is not a full-object checksum, particularly for multipart or some encryption workflows. Use the checksum the target supports.
5. Define cutover and rollback in one plan
Sequence the write freeze or dual-write point, final delta synchronization, application endpoint and credential changes, cache or DNS dependencies and observation period. Write failure criteria in advance: which checksum mismatch, error rate, latency, missing metadata or permission failure triggers a return to the original target? Do not delete source data before the validation window closes.
6. Complete the move on PortvMind Cloud Object Storage
PortvMind Cloud Object Storage provides S3-compatible buckets and file operations. Exercise the endpoint, access key and the API operations your application uses in a representative integration test. Regions are İstanbul (tr-ist-01) and Ankara (tr-ank-01).

Frequently asked questions about Cloud Infrastructure
Is an S3 sync command a complete migration plan?
No. Sync is a copy mechanism; it does not by itself resolve compatibility, versioning, metadata, permissions, integrity, application cutover or rollback.
How should object integrity be validated?
Compare object and byte counts, check supported checksum values and read representative objects through the application. An ETag is not a full-content checksum in every workflow.
Are versioning and metadata migrated automatically?
It depends on the tool and target behavior. During the trial copy, check whether all versions or only current objects move, along with metadata, tag and ACL mappings and delete markers.
Can an S3 migration be completed with no downtime?
It depends on the workload. Continuously written data may need dual writes or change capture; otherwise a short write-freeze window can be safer. Test these capabilities at both source and target.
Does PortvMind Cloud support every AWS S3 feature?
PortvMind Cloud Object Storage is an S3-compatible service. Exercise the operations you use in a representative integration test.
